He challenges them to look at the greater issues in the world and to think about the needs of others. For nearly ten years, John has shared with his students the issues of homelessness and the work HomeAid Orange County does to provide housing for homeless families and individuals.

Their call to action is to raise funds in support of HomeAid Orange County. Each year they create a silent auction fundraising event. These incredibly bright and resourceful kids use their business letter writing assignment to solicit donations. Their enthusiasm and dedication has been contagious and now two other teachers (Catherine Bott and Denise Palczewski) and their classes have joined the cause.

Many of the communities’ local businesses are facing a challenging economy and although willing a lot of companies were unable to contribute. The students didn’t give up and were rewarded for their perseverance. A $500 donation from Wal-Mart Brea, a parent donating a cherished autographed Joe Montana jersey, donations from Embassy Suites, a luxury suite (for 20 people) at a Clipper game in addition to many more items and cash donations helped these spectacular kids break their own fundraising record. They raised more than $3,600!!

When the students were asked why they were so determined to make this event successful Josh (an 8th grad student) shared, “Some kids have other things to worry about other than homework and school. They’re worried about if they’re going to have food to eat and where they are going to sleep at night. I realized how fortunate we are.”

John has planted the seed of philanthropy in the lives of these students. This has already proven to be an enduring legacy. One of his former students shared with him that she is now leading fundraising efforts at high school in support of community needs.

“I really want my students to realize that the tools they use in the classroom can make a tangible difference in someone’s life, and what a great feeling it is to help others…who in turn can return the favor to someone else. “ John David Williams

Laura's House Partners with HomeAid Orange County to Celebrate Groundbreaking its New Emergency Shelter for Families Impacted by Domestic Violence

To meet the growing need for emergency shelter and long-term transitional housing services for families impacted by domestic violence, Laura’s House, a non-profit organization whose mission is to change the social beliefs, attitudes and behaviors that perpetuate domestic violence, while creating a safe space in which to empower individuals and families affected by abuse, recently embarked on a $4.5 million Cornerstone Capital campaign to re-build its emergency shelter, and expand its transitional housing facility.

To commemorate the groundbreaking of the new emergency shelter facility, Laura’s House, in partnership with HomeAid Orange County, will host a ceremony on Thursday, March 10, 2011 from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. at Portobello Road Resale Boutique, located at 23635 El Toro Road in Lake Forest.

“We are proud to partner with HomeAid Orange County in celebrating such an important milestone in our shelter re-build project,” said Margaret Bayston, CEO and Executive Director, Laura’s House. “For many years now, this project has been a dream for our organization, and we are grateful to all of the individuals and businesses who are committing both their time and financial resources to make this dream a reality.”

In 2010, 269 individuals, including 152 children, received services through the Laura’s House emergency shelter program. By expanding its emergency shelter, Laura’s House will also increase countywide capacity for serving individuals impacted by domestic violence by 15%.

The groundbreaking ceremony will begin with a light breakfast, followed by a flag salute from a local Boy Scout Troop, and then an inspirational invocation. The program will include comments by Margaret Bayston; Scott Larson, Executive Director for HomeAid Orange County; Laura Khouri, Chair, Laura’s House Board of Directors; and Wayne Pinnell, Chair, Laura’s House Cornerstone Capital Campaign. City and government officials from Lake Forest and surrounding cities are expected to attend the event.

During the groundbreaking ceremony, development and building partners for the shelter re-build project will be recognized and receive certificates of appreciation for their contributions to the success of this project. They pulled together a team of artists, community members, students and business leaders to join them in their efforts to create this compelling video. Their ultimate goals are to generate community awareness and to encourage others to join them in their support of HomeAid.

Home Again showcases the musical talent of Los Angeles singer-songwriter John Batdorf and Orange County based singer-songwriter Jason Feddy.

HomeAid Orange County One of the Benefactors of ClubCorp Charity Classic

HomeAid Orange County is honored to be selected as one of the charities benefiting from the Aliso Viejo Country Club's ClubCorp Charity Classic 2010. (May 19, 2009) – Twenty year old HomeAid Orange County and newly incorporated non-profit agency The Teen Project have announced they are joining forces to remodel and expand a Lake Forest home to provide housing for emancipated foster youth. When completed the now three-bedroom home will be expanded to a six bedroom home with the capacity to provide a secure and stable environment for up to five young women and a live-in house monitor.

“When I met Lauri Burns, The Teen Project founder, and learned about the organization’s work with homeless youth I knew The Teen Project was a good fit for the HomeAid model. Together we can address the specific housing needs of emancipated foster youth,” said Scott Larson, HomeAid Orange County Executive Director.

Studies done on California foster youth are evidence for the need of specialized programs for this specific segment of the homeless population.

In California 65 percent of foster youth, emancipate without a place to live.

Within eighteen months of their discharge, nearly 40 percent of transitioning youth are homeless.

Although their desire to further their education is high, only 3 percent go to college

Fifty-one percent are unemployed.

In any given year, foster children comprise less than 0.3 percent of the state's population, yet 40 percent of persons living in homeless shelters are former foster children.

Burns personally understands the issues facing foster youth because she was a “system kid.” As a victim of child abuse, she entered the juvenile justice system in her early teens and at 18, she aged out of foster care and was legally declared an adult. Alone and unprepared to live independently, by the time Burns was 19 years old she was a drug addict, a single mother and used prostitution for income to survive.

At the age of 23, Burns was raped, brutally beaten and abandoned on an Orange County, Calif. canyon road left to die - but she survived. In recovery, for the first time she told a counselor about her abusive history and released all the pain she had desperately buried for years. Now she had the desire to change her life and she did.

Today, Burns is a successful business woman, incredible mother (her daughter recently graduated from Columbia School of Social Work) and a dedicated foster mother. To date, she has been a foster mother to 20 foster children. Lauri has committed her life to care for children no one else wants and to help them successfully transition into adulthood.

When completed the remodeled Lake Forest house will provide a home with a family support system for young women who have aged out of the foster care system. The average stay in the program will be 24 months. Residents will live in a stable environment with guidance and structure provided by professional staff. The ultimate goal for each young woman is to become a productive, independent and self-sufficient adult.

Several companies and individuals have donated funds and services for the project, but community support is still needed to complete this remodel. Thursday, May 21, 2009 HomeAid Orange County is hosting a presentation at the construction site to introduce The Teen Project. If you would like to attend or learn more about the project, email Ken Yannayon at ken@homeaidoc.org or call 949.553.9510.

About HomeAid Orange County
HomeAid Orange County is the founding chapter of a national non-profit organization with the mission to build and maintain dignified housing where homeless families and individuals can rebuild their lives. Founded in 1989 by the Orange County Chapter of the Building Industry Association of Southern California, HomeAid acts as the housing developer and liaison between service providers, community volunteers, builders and specialty contractors. To date the organization has completed 44 housing developments that serve victims of domestic violence, pregnant homeless women, abused and abandoned children, homeless adults living with HIV/AIDS and homeless families. www.homeaidoc.org

About The Teen Project
THE TEEN PROJECT a 501c3 organization, founded by Lauri Burns in response to her overwhelming feeling that no matter how many teens she fostered, it was never enough. Burns’ dream is that no teen should ever be without a home or a family and her vision is very clear that “system” teens receive all of the resources and amenities that are provided for "normal" kids. Led by a dedicated team of community volunteers working with foster children and emancipated foster youth, The Teen Project is creating a prototype of transitional housing specifically addressing the needs of homeless foster youth that have been turned out to the streets at the age of 18 with no family or resources. www.theteenproject.us

# # #

20/20 Platinum Club

Twenty years ago a group of compassionate men and women made a commitment to lead the fight against homelessness using their talents and resources. Jennifer became pregnant and they both made the commitment to change their lives for their unborn child. The determined couple took steps to reach their goal. First, they each checked into individual rehabilitation programs with the resolve to become healthy. Jennifer gave birth to a healthy, drug free baby boy they named Gabriel. Successfully completing the programs, the next step was to become self-sufficient. Their past life had caused them to lose everything. Even though they were now clean and healthy, they were a family without a home.

They entered Fullerton Interfaith Emergency Service's (FIES) New Vista Transitional Living Center in April 2007. Richard worked in construction and Jennifer obtained a job as a podiatrist's assistant. They worked hard and successfully completed the program in September after paying off $11,000 in debt, saving $2,500 and still had an additional $1,500 t0 pay expenses to move into their own apartment in Anaheim, Calif.

Jennifer and Richard are a shining success story. When an opening for a resident manager arose at New Vista Transitional Living Center, the outstanding couple was FIES Executive Director Judi Bambas' first choice for this key position.

"I'm thrilled to have Jennifer and Richard on staff. They are fabulous role models for our clients. Richard is hardworking and dedicated to helping the residents. Jennifer is still working and attending Fullerton College training to be a registered nurse. There is no limit to what this couple will achieve," said Bambas.

Kimera's Oscar Viewing Party, Make Sure You Attend!

Kimera Restaurant is hosting an Oscar Viewing Party to benefit HomeAid Orange County.
